Interview with Mr. Kolimas
Who is Mr. Kolimas?
Mr. Kolimas is a jack of all traits in and outside of the classroom. Known for his extensive career in English, many praise Mr. Kolimas for his vitality in the classroom, which brings a smile to the faces of many students. In addition, Mr. Kolimas has immersed himself in a history of coaching including girls tennis, boys basketball, girls basketball, and many more. He has voiced his conviction about his passion for learning—a conviction sparked by a subtle conversation with a college professor. In that small moment his vocation was discovered.
What is your philosophy of education?
Well, it’s sort of captured by a quote, students should think for themselves and back up what they believe with evidence to make education a joyful experience.
Why did you decide to become an English teacher?
It was until my professor told me: “Of course, you are going to teach English.” And he said it with so much conviction—I finished college to get a teaching education.
In your opinion, what are the qualities of an excellent teacher? What are your best qualities as a teacher?
First, you have to be competent in the area or expertise and you know that you are teaching students—teaching content matters. You must reach every student—every student brings different ethics and backgrounds because you are not teaching one-on-one. And lastly, you must use other students to learn as well.
What about working at Marian Catholic High School appeals to you?
I used to be a member of a team. But when I started working at Marian Catholic, I was a part of a community. There was such a positive vibe in the school, and it was motivating for me to put forth my best effort to be the best.
What is your favorite book and author?
One Flew Over the Cuckoo Nest, because it has a terrific sense of a vulnerable, yet enjoyable experience—but it is also so somber, serious, and moving.
What is one you would use to describe yourself?
Uplifting.
What contribution do you plan to make to this school?
I am willing to help out the community here. In terms of sports, I’ve coached basketball extensively for 40 years including Girls Tennis. I’ve coached a few teams in college extensively; however, I think I’m at the point where I have to put coaching aside now.
What is your favorite book quote?
It’s a quote from Henry David Thoreau: “Go confidently in the direction of your dreams.” And it is about not following anyone else’s path—blaze your own conviction, and your own path
