America has laid a foundation of government rejecting the principles of monarchy. In fact, the early colonists in the mid 1700s rebelled and strived to escape from it. America was partly built off the idea of an inclusive government. And as time went on, the United States began to recognize the rights of not only white people but African Americans and women.
Today, we experience a different problem— the very thing that American colonists tried to escape from— what some may categorize as a shift towards tyranny. Just as the American colonists stood up to King George, today, people are making their voices heard in similarly meaningful ways.
The question that the No Kings Protest has brought is how far can a President in a democracy can overstep his or her Constitutional powers.
A Pew Research Center poll reveals that half of US adults believe Trump is setting too much policy by executive order. These findings indicate a rising fear of expanding executive authority in the Trump Administration. From these findings, it can be inferred that some agree that the Trump administration has been failing to use that executive authority to meet the needs of his own people. Opponents allege that the Trump administration is catering to the economic elite as opposed to fixing issues for everyday America, such as the rising price of healthcare and housing. Many would argue that America is not being put first—despite Trump emphasizing the concept of making America great again. This has sparked outrage from many because the role of a President in a democracy like America should be to attend to the needs of the people and nation.
There is a lot to think about when it comes to the future of our nation and at the end of the day it is up to you whether it’s important to protest perceived injustices. In the view of this author, we should all take note of these protests, become more empowered, engaged, and active in our civic lives. Even though we are young, we must all find our voice because the abuses that some of us see in the Trump administration can lead to a permanent change in society. You don’t have to watch the news every day or make petitions but just contribute in small ways. Even if it is just taking note of these protests that is the first step to becoming active, aware, engaged young citizens. Any call to action is significant because when we find our place, find our purpose in standing up for what we believe in we can change the future of an entire generation. It is pivotal that we come together to make a change whether we are in alignment with the Trump administration or not, because the future of America is in our hands and staying idle is never an option.
