“If you didn’t understand what I just said, you have four months to learn,” Bad Bunny told critics during a monologue on Saturday Night Live. It was a few weeks before the Puerto Rican artist was confirmed to be the headliner for the Super Bowl 2026 halftime show. Amidst all the backlash and criticism, many still await his performance in February.
Bad Bunny, also known as Benito Antonio Martínez Ocasio, is a three-time Grammy Winning rapper who was announced to headline the Superbowl for this year on September 28, 2025. His album “Debí Tirar Más Fotos” in 2025 was a widespread musical and streaming success as his album gained over billions of streams leading him to top the charts worldwide. Songs such as NuevaYol and EoO were massive successes with hundreds of millions of streams and engagement on social media. Moreover, the artist is hosting an ongoing tour for his newly released album which began in late 2025 and will continue in early 2026.
But the conflict as mentioned earlier does not lie in uncertainty about the artist’s performance. Rather, many criticize Bad Bunny because of the current political divide and questions over whether or not he will perform in Spanish. With the heightened crisis between immigrants and deportation, the backlash is only seeming to get worse but the artist stands strong amongst the support of his fans.
According to an NFL article , Roger Goodwell (Commissioner of the National Football League) defends the decision of the artist headling for the major event saying, “He’s one of the leading and most popular entertainers in the world,” He continues on, “That’s what we try to achieve. It’s an important stage for us. It’s an important element to the entertainment value.”:max_bytes(150000):strip_icc():focal(749x0:751x2)/Bad-Bunny-performs-onstage-at-the-2025-iHeartRadio-Music-Awards-100325-c3a2b3a2b888449d89d1ffca4bf68be3.jpg)
