Speech Team Takes Several 1sts at Marian Classic

The Marian Catholic Speech Team started their varsity and novice seasons by hosting the annual Marian Classic Nov. 12. More than a dozen schools including Homewood-Flossmoor, Thornton, Oak Lawn and Lemont competed alongside Marian.
The competition consisted of over 13 events from Radio Speaking and Impromptu Speaking to Original Comedy and Dramatic Duet Acting.
Even with a stacked competition, Marian pulled off giant victories with over 20 finalists and 13 individual first and second place awards.
Notably standing out was J Van Beest winning two first-place awards. Van Beest partnered with Aaron Yock to finish first in Humorous Duet Acting, and also earned first place in Humorous Interpretation.
Also earning first place awards were senior Coralie Humbert in Extemporaneous Speaking, senior Marcus Bobbitt in Informative Speaking, sophomore Trinity Slaughter in Oratorical Declaration, junior Delcena Sawyer in Original Comedy, and junior Patrick McDermott in Extemporaneous Speaking, Next-In.
Sophomore Noelle Treadwell also took home two 2nd place awards; partnering with Bobbitt in Dramatic Duet Acting and solo in Dramatic Interpretation.
Also earning second place awards were: Mariana Rivero in Original Oratory, Candice Brennan and Delcena Sawyer in Dramatic Duet Acting, Kamryn Wiggins in Special Occasion Speaking, and Trinity Slaughter in Prose Reading.
Marian also had a number of competitors earn top six awards.
The Marian Speech Team will split its squad to compete this weekend at the Thornton Turkey Tournament at Thornton High School in Harvey and the Burbank Cinematic Universe meet at Reavis High School in Burbank, where events celebrate a comic book/graphic novel theme.
