On and off the field, the Spartan football class of 2022 have distinguished themselves through their perseverance.

Before Friday’s football game, Marian Catholic will recognize 14 student-athletes.

Seniors Isaiah Beamon, Tyler Belton, Caleb Hines, Zion Horn, Aaron Hudson, Demarcus Jackson, Isaiah Johnson, Derek Marin-Martinez, Leo Mendez, Wande Oluwide, Dylan Ross, Ernest Tetter, Kendall Winters and Correll Young will be honored Oct. 15.

“As sophomores, they were part of the first team to go to the playoffs in 10 to 11 years,” said Head Football Coach Eric Middleton.

Then, the COVID-19 pandemic hit.

From August 2020 to February 2021, there was no football.

“These guys have fought hard,” Middleton said of his seniors. “They have had to endure.”

Players have felt that stress.

And when football returned in the Spring, player pushed through into the Fall.

My happiest memory is when our team got the first win of our season, said Senior Leo Mendez. The memory of seeing everyone excited made me happy.

Now, Mendez’s time – and that of the other seniors – is coming to an end.

Something I will miss is the bonds I made, Mendez said.  The relationship with my teammates (is what) will be missed the most by me.

Coach Middleton understood that sentiment.

“Everything wasn’t perfect,” Middleton said of the past two years, “but what they had to go through will make them better men when they leave Marian Catholic.”

True and strong and bold.
