The WORD on Wordle

By now, you must have heard the buzz about Wordle.

But what is Wordle?

Wordle is a daily word game that you can play online. It’s fun, it’s simple, and it’s similar to a crossword puzzle, but it’s only played once a day.

Every 24 hours there’s a new word of the day, and it’s up to you to guess what it is.

The website itself does a wonderful job of explaining the rules to us.

Wordle gives each player 6 tries to guess a random 5-letter word each day.

As seen above, if the letter is correctly guessed and in the right place, it will show up in a green box. The correct letter in the wrong place is yellow. The incorrect letter, that is not in the word at all, will show up gray.

Now, how was Wordle born?

The game Wordle has gone from dozens of people playing it, to hundreds of thousands in just a few short months. This game was created by a software engineer in Brooklyn for his significant other. Josh Wardle knew his partner loved word games, so he created a guessing game for the two of them. This game was built from Josh’s love for his girlfriend, knowing she liked a challenge. With a play on letters, Josh Wardle created “Wordle.”

After the couple played it for months, and after it quickly became an obsession in his family, Josh decided to release it to the rest of the world. A month after it’s release, just 90 people played. Two months later, more than 300,000 people were playing.

At the end of January, Josh Wardle sold the game to The New York Times. Wardle said that he noticed that his “game had gotten bigger than ever” and that he’s “just one person.” The game is a part of The New York Times puzzle subscription, but Josh made sure it was free-to-play for all of us.

After learning the fun facts about how Wordle came to fruition, hopefully this article inspires you to Word-up.
